The Bridge on the Drina is a novel by Serbian writer and Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić. The novel tells the story of building a bridge over the Drina River in the Bosnian town of Visegrad. The construction of the bridge was ordered by Mehmed Pasha Sokolovic, a famous official of the Ottoman Empire who was a native Serb from Rudo. Even as a little boy, Bajica was taken to Constantinople with other children as a blood tribute. Despite the widespread opinion, Andrić did not receive the Nobel Prize for Literature for this novel, but, like all other winners, he was officially awarded for his entire literary work, and not for an individual work.
