Product Information
Rest of the Bashi-bazouk," also known as "Arnaut Warrior" or "Albanian Warrior," is an early work by Paja Jovanović, created in the mid-1880s. It is an example of an academic realism painting from the artist's Orientalist phase. The painting depicts an armed Bashi-bazouk resting while drinking tea or coffee and smoking a hookah. The soldier is dressed in rich attire and fully equipped with weapons, including pistols, yataghans, and an Arnaut rifle called "rašak" (krdžalink). Due to the lavish attire and equipment, some art historians speculate that the person in the painting might actually be a commander of a small troop.
Paja Jovanović's painting "Rest of the Bashi-bazouk" was sold at a Sotheby's auction in London for £304,800, equivalent to €349,500.*
The original painting measures 41 x 32.5 cm.
The replica painting also measures 41 x 32.5 cm.
