Biography

Dragan Rumenčić (1935–2024), caricaturist, painter, puzzle creator, and musician.

He was born in Zemun, graduated from the Zemun Gymnasium, and earned his degree from the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade under Professor Bajlon. He had been a member of ULUPUDS since 1968. He spent his entire career at the satirical magazine Jež as a caricaturist and cartoon editor—a publication that, by coincidence, was founded just a few days before his birth.

Dragan Rumenčić exhibited in group shows both domestically and internationally. He held a solo caricature exhibition in Skopje in 1977, followed by the collection Belgrade from the (Old) Present Days in Belgrade in 1979; the exhibitions 25 Years on Duty at Jež and Sport in Photo-Caricature, both held in Zemun in 1980; then at caricature exhibitions in Sarajevo (1981), Zagreb (1982), and London (1985). In 1990, he presented 35 Years at Jež in Belgrade, and in 1992, Malfunctions in the Brain in Zemun. A particularly noteworthy exhibition, Zemun Citizens in Caricature, took place in the Zemun National Theatre in 1985, and became the basis for a monograph of the same title six years later: Between Silence and Laughter, featuring over 350 residents of Zemun.

His exhibitions continued over the years, and he achieved notable success with a 1994 tourist poster of Zemun, which inspired a mural painted in Gospodska Street, Zemun, in 2020.
