The painting explores the Baudelairean tension between "Spleen" (a heavy melancholy and boredom) and "The Ideal" (the aspiration towards beauty and spiritual elevation). 

Gaze and Facial Expression: Baudelaire's penetrating, almost accusatory gaze is directed straight at the viewer. It is not the gaze of a man seeking solace, but of one who has recognized the harsh truth of existence. The furrows on his forehead and pursed lips suggest intellectual effort and contempt for bourgeois hypocrisy. 

Symbolism of Light and Darkness: The figure is placed in a dimly lit environment reminiscent of a Gothic cell or an isolated study. A single burning candle symbolizes the transience of time (Tempus fugit) and the fragility of human life, while the Gothic window in the background hints at a longing for something otherworldly and unattainable.

Color and Texture: The dominant purple color of the robe suggests an aristocratic spirit (dandyism), but also the color of wine and passion, those "artificial paradises" to which the poet escaped from harsh reality. The rough brick walls in the background create a sense of claustrophobia, emphasizing the poet's entrapment in the "prison" of the body and society.
